Lost in all the confusion was the impressive effort put forth by Seattle starter Doug Fister who went the distance yet suffered his ninth loss of the campaign. Fister allowed six hits and just the one run, while striking out seven in the hard-luck loss.
Against the Kansas City Royals at home earlier this week, the right-hander gave up three runs on seven his and a pair of walks, while striking out six over six innings in a 4-3 win. Entering the month of July the Virginia native is still trying to recover from an 0-5 start to begin 2011.
Beavan, a towering right-hander who stands 6-7, is making his debut at the major league level after producing a 5-3 record with the Rainiers this season. Beavan was actually roughed up in his most recent outing on Tuesday when he was tagged for six runs on 12 hits over four innings against Las Vegas on the road.
Meanwhile, San Diego has scored the fewest runs of any club in the National League with just 286, but in the case of the Padres they are eight games under .500 and 10 games out of first even though they've won eight of their last 10 contests.
Jered Weaver tossed eight innings of one-run ball for the hosts as he picked up his 10th win of the season against just four setbacks. The Angels starter surrendered four hits and walked two while fanning eight as he gave up one run or less for the sixth time in his last eight appearances.
Weaver, who now leads the AL in ERA with a mark of 1.92, was speaking of Vernon Wells who contributed with a two-run home run, as well as Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu who also both plated a pair for the victors.
Andre Ethier accounted for two of the five hits by the Dodgers, while James Loney scored the lone run for the visitors in the fifth inning.
With the defeat the Dodgers, just 3-8 in this series the last two years, now find themselves all alone in last place in the NL West, 10 games under .500 and 11 games out of contention.
The seven-year veteran failed to win a single game in the month of June and the Angels behind him dropped four of his five appearances overall. However, on Monday the team managed to pick up a 4-3 win against Washington at home as Santana permitted just two runs on five hits, while striking out five in eight innings of action.
Billingsley worked through six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a couple of walks while striking out four in the triumph.
Keeping the Dodgers relevant for the time being has been Matt Kemp who is ranked in the top-three in the NL in home runs (22), batting average (.327) and RBI (64).

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
